Diabetes can be challenging to manage, but you don't have to do it alone.

The Diabetes Management Center at Rio Grande Regional Hospital provides education and support services to help manage all forms of diabetes and prediabetes in adults, children and expectant mothers. With accreditation from the American Diabetes Association, our educators work alongside your physician to develop a personalized plan.

Our center is led by skilled diabetes educators, registered nutritionists and nurse practitioners.

McAllen diabetes management services

From helping you make sense of your numbers to teaching you about insulin preparation, our team focuses on improving your diabetes self-care skills and enhancing the quality of your life. While we partner with physicians to create personalized plans, many of our services are available to patients without a physician's referral.

The Diabetes Management Center provides a range of services with each visit, including:

  • Blood glucose screenings
  • Hemoglobin A1C tests
  • Medication management, including insulin training
  • One-on-one counseling with a certified diabetes care and education specialist

Diabetes self-management classes

For more detailed help managing your diabetes, consider attending one of our diabetes self-management classes. Our experienced educators help with topics such as weight control, understanding diabetes management needs, and the prevention of long-term complications. Additionally, we offer classes specifically for pregnant women with gestational diabetes.

Classes cost $20 each and include a personalized meal plan and healthy lunch. After completing the class, a member of our support staff will follow-up with you to make sure we’ve addressed your specific needs and goals. All follow-up meetings are free.

Classes are offered in both English and Spanish from 8:00am - noon. To register or for more information, call (956) 632-6523.

Medical nutrition therapy services

This service is distinct and separate from the nutrition education included in our diabetes self-management classes, and is intended to act as a supplement for even more personalized nutrition needs. A physician referral is required to participate and is paid for by most insurance providers.

Our Medical Nutritional Therapy program offers patients one-on-one and group counseling with a registered dietitian who specializes in diabetes care and other nutritional conditions. The dietitian assists patients in developing realistic goals, meal management skills, flexible meal planning and weight management guidelines. Patients also learn how good nutrition impacts and improves their health regardless of their condition.

If you are seeking education for your diabetes, we invite you to learn more about the services we provide at the Diabetes Management Center at Rio Grande Regional Hospital. Walk-ins are welcomed, but appointments are encouraged.
